A Note on Wednesday’s Assembly with Pat Castle

This past Wednesday morning SMHS hosted Dr. Pat Castle from LIFE Runners at a school assembly ahead of his keynote address that evening at the Colorado Springs Diocese's annual Bishop's Respect Life Dinner. While Dr. Castle made some positive points, his presentation did not fully reflect our school's Catholic Christian values or the mission, approach, or tone of our school's pro-life organization. The SMHS Students for Life club is in its tenth year as a vibrant, active, peaceful, and service-oriented club whose Mission Statement remains, as it has been from day one, "to promote the sanctity of life from conception until natural death, both at the school and in the greater community, by planning, promoting, and participating in various pro-life activities." Each year the club organizes activities and brings in speakers that address pro-life issues throughout the entire life spectrum, including the sanctity of life in the womb, feeding the hungry in our community, helping the homeless, ministering to the elderly, teen suicide prevention, human trafficking, physician assisted suicide, sidewalk advocacy, and many other topics pertaining to life and the dignity of all humans, born and unborn. The SMHS Students for Life welcome all to join them as they continue to work to defend and promote all life. Please feel free to contact SMHS Administration or SMHS Students for Life officers, advisors, or members with any questions or for any additional information.

Girls Volleyball Pink Game  Honors 1997 Alumnae
On Thursday, Oct. 14, the Pirate volleyball team will play its annual PINK game and this year will play for, honor, and raise funds for a St. Mary’s alumnae who is currently battling stage 4 breast cancer, Jen Bowie ’97 (who is only 42). Her sisters also graduated as Pirates: Maggie ’99 and Christi ’00. Jen is a longtime supporter of St. Mary's High School and Catholic education. For years she has been a middle school teacher and is currently serving as the assistant principal at Guardian Angel Catholic School in Denver. She's the mother to two girls: Emma, a freshman, who attends Regis Jesuit High School; and Madison, an eighth grader, who attends Guardian Angel. Jen is flattered that the team has chosen her and plans to attend the game, if she is feeling okay.
